MPhil/PhD training for Universities

At present only 40% of academic staff in universities have a PhD; and some 2200 of those in post do not. The Project will make a contribution towards this, as an initial step, by funding individuals for MPhils/PhDs offered as split programmes between national universities and overseas universities. This will also have the additional benefit of promoting research in national universities. In exceptional cases, where expertise for PhD supervision is lacking in Sri Lanka, PhD programs will be supported in good universities in countries overseas, where possible within the region, within the given allocation. The allocations have been made to universities and undergraduate institutes on an equitable basis. This will favor strengthening the proportion of PhDs in arts and social sciences and will favor universities in the North and East and New Universities as they are critically short of suitable qualified staff.

Under this programme, the candidates are expected to register in a University other than which they are employed at. Exception will be made for disciplines where only one Department or Faculty is available in Sri Lanka. All MPhil/PhD programs are expected to be done in English medium (unless under exceptional circumstances) on full time leave. Period of training in the overseas university shall not exceed 12 months for a PhD degree, and 6 months for a MPhil degree.
